Sassetta was an important castle of the Pisan Republic, demolished in 1503 after the conquest. In 1516 were also exiled the original Lords of the place, the Pisans Orlandi of Sassetta. From the 16th century the village belonged to the family of Spanish origin Ramirez de Montalvo.

In the municipality of Sassetta, within the system of the Val di Cornia parks, there is the naturalistic Park Poggio blacks and forest–forest Museum.
